It's so sweet that for a moment, Maruki doesn't know what to do with it. He just squeezes Oona back, jostles her a little in the hug with a delayed laugh. ]
You don't have to thank me for any of that, but I appreciate it. And I enjoy hugs too! Consider this blanket permission to come get a counselor-approved hug any time.
[ A beat, and then, just a mite more serious than before: ]
[She doesn't answer for a moment before she heaves a sigh.]
If I was good, I would not get caught. If I was good...I do not know. Perhaps I should have made sure I died first. If they know I exist, they will know my family and others exist.
Maybe I am a danger to them all. I do not know. They tore me apart and put be back I do not know if they have something in me to track me or how to check.
[She sighs again, just staring on a fixed spot on his chest. She touches one of the scars around her neck] I should not have got caught... I do not think I can ever see my family again. Not like this, not how I look now.
[ Maruki can't help but flinch the tiniest bit at the assertion that she should have died; he's no stranger to hearing it from several in Somnius, but it never gets any easier.
As for the rest of it, though...
He looks down at Oona, still gathered up in his arms. It's an almost fraternal sort of feeling, despite her insistence that he's as much a member of her harem as anyone else. In the strange family unit that he considers their castle to be, she really is becoming something like a younger sister to him. ]
I think there are some people here who might be able to help figure that out. If there's a tracker in you, or anything else, I mean.
There is nothing to be sorry about. I do not have to celebrate every one. I am only turning 86.
[She really doesn't know what to do. In a perfect world she'd just spend it with family or learn some new magic. But she's hasn't celebrated her birthday in 20-some years and she doesn't even know where to begin]
I don't know... What do humans normally do for birthdays?
Only 86, huh? How long do mermaids usually live for...?
Well, usually we throw parties of some sort. But to be honest, I'm not much of a party guy... Vash's birthday is coming up, and I'm cooking a large dinner for the castle and one of his friends who's coming over. Oh, you're obviously coming to that, by the way!
I'm baking donuts for him too, which I've never done before. Baked goods are a common celebration.
Aside from that... You just enjoy spending time with the people you're close to, I guess. Oh, and you receive presents!
Mmm... Mother's mother lived to be 500? But we do not live forever. Often other predators or things get us. It is how life goes, so it is still surprising to live that long.
[She reads over the rest of it, trying to wrap her head around it and compare it to things she might've overheard and seen a little of]
I have not had baked goods. But also, I do not have many friends to celebrate with. There is you and Vash.
Akechi, sometimes. Is not enough people to make a big party.
[ 500... Wonders truly never cease. He wonders if 86 is still considered young for a mermaid.
Conversation best left for her belated celebration. ]
It doesn't have to be a big party. A dinner with the castle inhabitants would be fun, wouldn't it? Even though there's not many of us. Akechi-kun and Zazie-san would definitely both come. And you and Zazie-san both like sushi! I'd be happy to make it for you, if you'd like.
And yes, generally people give you presents. I'll certainly get you one. What sort of things would you like to receive?
[ Better late than never! One day, when Oona returns to the castle, she'll find in (wherever she tends to spend the most time privately) a small box containing a shiny necklace along with a simple note card:
Happy Birthday, Oona!
I'm sorry this was belated, but I hope next year we can have the big celebration that you deserve.
Thank you for being the brightest light in this castle.
She sit and holds the necklace in one hand, the note in the other, reading and re-reading it over and over again for a good 15 minutes before she goes tracking Maruki down personally to hug him again. No escape!!!!]
THE ONLY OVERFLOW I WILL DO i love oona
[ There is much to thank you for.

You are good, though. Why wouldn't I think that?
OONA LOVES *YOU*!! cw: suicidal ideation

Without hurting you, of course!

[She hasn't really talked to Zazie much, but if he likes sushi then he can't be so bad.]
Shiny things! Jewelry is nice! But anything shiny and nice is also fine.
[She considers a moment] one of the houses had a toaster. It was shiny AND it makes TOAST.
